Project Description
This project aims to deploy recently developed capabilities to simulate deflagration of solid composite propellants (SCPs) in the DoD HPC and test its ability to model grain-scale propellants. Current capabilities rely on phenomenological behavior to capture combustion dynamics, while newly developed model employs heat solvers. Although this results in an increase in computational cost, the benefit of physics-informed dynamics could outweigh these costs. Furthermore, SCPs are a common choice for solid rocket motors due to their chemical and mechanical stability. Understanding the dynamics of the burn process at the microscopic and mesoscopic length-scales is essential to better predicting the propellant’s performance. The intern will be tasked with ensuring that the models are properly configured by developing a workflow that generates synthetic microstructures and simulates the corresponding deflagration.
