Reference Number: ARL-SRP-00013
Project Description
The successful Faculty/Cadet would aid in the measurements and characterizations and/or simulations of the the interaction between high power continuous wave (CW) lasers and various materials, possibly including optics, structural materials, fabrics, etc. Measurements may include laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of various optical materials of relevance to Army systems. Simulations will focus on the thermal effects and factor in time, spot size, beam distribution, power, etc. Measurements will be based on ISO Laser Damage Standards 21254. The Faculty/Cadet would gain experience in high power continuous wave laser operation, laser damage measurements of optical materials, characterization of optical materials and thermal simulations of optics under cw laser exposure. The exact scope of the AIAD would be tailored to the Faculty/Cadet’s background and time constraints.
This opportunity can be solely simulation, solely experimental, a hybrid of both, or start from one and learn and develop the skills for the other.
