Reference Number: ARL-SRP-00054
Project Description
The Army Research Laboratory (ARL) is in the frontier of developing novel materials and manufacturing processes that enable production of Army capabilities with novel performance at unprecedented rates and lower costs. Candidates will work hands on with advanced manufacturing techniques and equipment in a laboratory environment to produce material coupons and hardware for testing and analysis. Research projects may include development and integration of robotics, cold spray, materials characterization (metallography, specimen preparation, mechanical testing, microscopy, x-ray diffraction), and a variety of 3D printing (additive manufacturing) techniques of metallic (laser powder bed fusion, electron beam powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition), polymeric (stereolithography, fused filament deposition, inkjet, selective laser sintering) , and electronic materials. Projects may be tailored to the participants experience to include: numerical modeling of processes and materials; microstructure-processing-property-relations; powder processing (milling, sizing, compaction and sintering); and machine learning and data analytics. Participants will work with ARL researchers to contribute to R&D project outcomes and interact directly with soldiers to understand Army needs for advanced manufacturing solutions to battlefield challenges.
