Military Dependent Virtual STEM Camp

The Military Dependent Virtual STEM Camp is a four‑day remote program designed to ignite curiosity in coding, engineering, and video game design among students in grades 8–10. Hosted by the Army Research Laboratory in collaboration with the Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP), this immersive experience offers military-dependent students hands-on science and engineering activities, mentorship from Army scientists, and a glimpse into cutting-edge research.

Empowering military dependents to code, create, and contribute to the future.

Program Overview

During this four‑day virtual camp, students explore the fundamentals of computer science and game design. Each day has a specific theme that builds technical skills and creativity:

  • Day 1 – Kick Off: Introduction to coding and video game design.
  • Day 2 – Level Up: Programming tips and tricks; diving into the design process.
  • Day 3 – Circuitry & Engineering: Build a customized video game controller.
  • Day 4 – Pulling It All Together: Finalize the project, play the game, and share it with the team.

Each day features a guest Army scientist who shares their passion for science, discusses their career path, and provides information on STEM scholarships and opportunities. Participants receive a supply kit—including a circuit board and components—mailed at no cost, allowing them to build their own custom game controller. Students require access to a desktop or laptop computer with a USB port and an internet connection; mobile devices are not compatible with the full range of activities.

Eligibility and Logistics

The camp is open to rising 8th–10th grade students who are dependents of active‑duty service members. Participants can join from anywhere with internet access on a computer with a USB port. Applicants should apply during the posted application window, which typically includes staff applications opening in early November and student applications opening in early January, with the program running from mid-July.

Participation and Compensation

There is no fee to participate in this virtual camp, and students do not receive a stipend. However, the program relies on a talented team of near‑peer mentors and teachers to lead the hands‑on activities. Near‑peer mentors—college or high‑school students—work alongside teachers and U.S. Army research scientists to provide inquiry‑based experiences. These mentors receive an educational stipend based on their experience and education level. Teachers who facilitate the program also receive a stipend commensurate with their experience and credentials.

How to apply

Interested students and mentors should monitor the AEOP website for application dates and submit the online application when available. The Military Dependent Virtual STEM Camp is part of the Army’s GEMS program, so application processes align with GEMS procedures. For more information, contact the program representative listed on the AEOP site.
