The Davies Postdoctoral Fellowship offers recent Ph.D graduates a unique opportunity to teach at the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) and conduct cutting‑edge research at the Army Research Laboratory (ARL). Jointly sponsored by ARL and USMA, the program enriches cadet education while bringing new expertise to Army research. Fellows split their time between classroom instruction in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at West Point and research projects aligned with Army modernization priorities at ARL.

Desired qualifications

  • Recent Ph.D graduates in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science.
  • Experience with powder‑fed Directed Energy Deposition manufacturing and proficiency in metallographic techniques.
  • A strong background in mechanical testing of materials and a proven record of research productivity.
  • Ability to teach undergraduate courses and mentor cadets. Prior teaching or mentoring experience is desirable.
  • Experience with ceramics or gradient materials is a plus.
  • Self‑motivated researchers who thrive both independently and in collaborative teams.
