Project Description
Support structures in metal additive manufacturing allow for easy part removal from build plates, thermal dissipation and support for overhanging features. Although used extensively in laser powder bed fusion, currently, support structures are not well developed for systems with coarser deposition such as laser powder directed energy deposition (LP-DED). This project focuses on the feasibility of developing support structures for LP-DED either through processing parameter control or through design solutions. The objective is to design and test several support structure designs to be manufactured by LP-DED. Work will include development, printing and mechanical testing of potential support structure designs. Some of the tools available include SolidWorks software for 3D CAD design and printing on one of our LP-DED systems. Initial mechanical testing will likely occur through mechanical (pliers) removal, but more quantitative testing may occur if time allows. Deliverables will include documentation of the designs and the respective performance through a presentation and a report.
