Reference Number: ARL-SRP-00018
Project Description
This project will address the evaluation and optimization of dissimilar metal laminates for robust mechanical performance in extreme environments. Techniques such as laser impulse welding, explosive bonding, roll bonding, and others can be used to produce dissimilar metal laminates with novel mechanical properties at various length scales. However, materials selection-process parameter-joint microstructure relationships are not conclusively established, and their effects on joint performance across extreme service temperatures, loads, and strain rates are not fully understood.
Participants will characterize and test as-received, as-welded, and heat treated specimens to inform weld process maps and microstructure-performance relationships. Techniques including finite element modeling (FEM), heat treatment, metallographic sample preparation (sectioning, grinding, polishing, etching), optical microscopy, electron microscopy, quasistatic mechanical testing, and laboratory impact (Charpy V-notch, drop tower) testing may be used to generate, collect, and analyze data during the project. Technical training on new tools and techniques will be provided throughout the summer internship in addition to professional development opportunities and experiences within DEVCOM ARL and across APG.
